True Love is Specific

I love coffee — the earthy, warm, bold, acidic, smooth, welcoming hospitality of a great cup of coffee sets it apart from other drinks I could choose.  There’s something special in a moment set apart to enjoy the aroma, the flavor, and the conversations that come around a well made espresso or french press shared among friends.  Even as I write this message, I am sipping a fresh cup of Starbucks Decaf Christmas Blend and reveling in the unique combination of regional flavors coming together in this seasonal offering from one of my favorite coffee roasters.

True love is specific.

The difference between like and love is the depth and breadth of the connection you share.  How specifically you know someone.  How much of life you have shared.  How many experiences you have been through together.  How individually you understand who they are, what they are capable of, where they are coming from, where they are, and where they are going.  And, how reciprocal the relationship, understanding, and connection are between the two of you.

True love is specific.

When you are looking for a relationship, much of the advice you get is general.  “She should be a Christian.”  “He should have a good job.”  While these general recommendations can provide a decent framework for figuring out where to start looking for that special someone that you are going to spend the rest of your life with, the ultimate success of your search for a husband or wife is specific to the point of being unique.  You aren’t just looking for any Christian, you are looking for someone who uniquely shares your core beliefs and approach, someone you identify with and believe in and who identifies and believes in you.  You aren’t just trying to find someone who has a good job, you are looking for someone you can partner with in every aspect of professional and personal life — someone who you specifically want to invest everything you have in making successful, fulfilled, and empowered to achieve great things in all of their pursuits.  Someone who is not just interesting, intriguing, or compelling, but who you passionately, persistently, individually, specifically, and particularly want to bless — not just once, not just as a gesture, not just romantically, not just to get something in return, not just because you like being good to people, but because from a deep and lasting desire to provide for them each and every day you see the opportunity to have that connection that will last a lifetime.

True love is specific.

“For God loved the world so much that He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.” – John 3

God loves you – individually, specifically, particularly.  God is passionate about investing in your success.  God is persistently looking for the opportunity to bless you, to provide for you, to heal you, to restore you, to save you, to empower you, to fulfill your personal and professional life and bring you into a lasting and intimate relationship with Him that will take you places you haven’t even dreamed of.  God is not just dedicated to you as a part of the human race, or some nameless cog in the wheel of creation, or some non-specific life force in the flow of energy toward eternity.  God is dedicated to knowing, understanding, and loving you specifically.  More than anyone else, God knows your entire history.  God already understands your story, your baggage, your issues, your life.  God loves you not in spite of who you are, but because of who you are.  And most of all, more than anyone else, God sees everything that you can become.

God is willing to invest in you because He knows what you are capable of.  God asks for specific actions, specific accomplishments, specific relationships, specific missions, specific changes because He knows how you will be the most successful, the most blessed, the most fulfilled, the most joyful, the most satisfied, and the most effective.  God knows how you can have the greatest impact on the world around you.

When you get in line with God’s vision for your life, its not just a general alignment of meaning well to people or feeling good about yourself in a vague, non-specific way.  Accepting Jesus Christ as your personal God and savior means opening your life to His specific vision of what your best life can be.

Here’s the secret, there is no universal best.  Life is not a race in which only a few people can rise to the top and the rest are trapped in mediocrity or defeat because God’s resources are somehow limited and God’s attention can’t be spread too widely.  On the contrary, the beauty of the fact that God is infinite is that He can spend His entire attention, focus, dedication, and love both on you specifically and individually, and on every single human being that He creates.

Life was designed as a win, win situation.

God builds every human being to succeed.

God envisions every human being uniquely making a contribution and achieving at their individual best.  God knows the depth and breadth of the promises that He has made in you, about you, and for you.  He is ready to specifically favor you with an overflowing abundance of super-natural health, super-natural promotion, super-natural goodness, super-natural fulfillment, peace, joy, contentment, accomplishment, and success.  The list continues.  God is not holding back.  God is available in person to individually connect with and find a relationship with you, but it will only happen if you specifically choose to be in a relationship with Him.

True love is specific.

Loving God is more than just accepting that there is a higher power or a non-descript creator.  Knowing God is more than just believing that He exists.  Being in a meaningful, loving, dedicated, mutual, fulfilling, and lasting relationship with God requires that you meet Him, specifically, Jesus, in person, for yourself.  And then getting to know what He specifically is into — what interests Him, what motivates Him, what excites and inspires Him, what makes Him get up in the morning, what He loves doing, what He thinks about, what He is passionate about, what is important to Him, what He values, what He spends His time on, what He believes in, what He knows — everything.

True love is specific.

So, get out there and start connecting with people like God connects with them.  Listen to their stories.  Hear their dreams, the desires of their heart, their most deeply held beliefs. Recognize the potential that lives within each person individually, specifically, and particularly.  And then love them like God loves them — for who they are, who they will become, where they come from, and where they are going.

Choose to be a part of the individual and specific journeys that you find yourself connected to.

Invest in the love and the eternal value that you see uniquely in the people in your life.

Make the world a better place because you specifically have been a part of it.
